Scallop Shell Butter Dish & Knife Set
France, c. 1910s
Shaped as a stylised scallop shell, this butter dish departs from strict naturalism in favour of a softer, more fluid interpretation. The radiating ribs are gently offset and elongated, creating a sense of movement rather than symmetry—an approach characteristic of early 20th-century Art Nouveau, where natural forms were abstracted and refined for the table.
The hinged silver-plated lid opens smoothly to reveal its original frosted glass inlay, designed both for practicality and visual contrast. The dish is accompanied by its original small serving knife, completing the set as it was intended to be used.
Marked “5g”, the piece indicates a good quality French silver plating. Light surface wear and patina remain, preserving the quiet character of an object that has lived several lives.
Both functional and sculptural, this is a refined table object that reflects a period when even the simplest rituals were shaped by design.
