Sculptural Lava Glaze Amphora Vase

West Germany, c.1970s

About This Piece

A sculptural amphora vase produced in West Germany during the 1970s.

Defined by its rounded body and twin handles, the form reinterprets a classical silhouette through a more modern, grounded lens. Its wide proportions give the piece a strong architectural presence, allowing it to read as much as an object as a vessel.

The surface is finished in a richly expressive lava glaze in tones of ochre, brown and charcoal. The glaze flows organically across the body, creating a textured, almost geological effect that shifts subtly with light. Variations in tone and depth give the piece movement, with cooler blue hues emerging through darker, earthy layers.

Both tactile and decorative, the vase works beautifully styled on its own or with a few branches, adding warmth and contrast to an interior.

Produced by Ruscha, a key maker within the West German pottery movement.
