Kurt Jesch Sculptural Brass Candleholders

Austria, c. 1960s

About This Piece

At first glance, these candleholders appear as restrained, almost severe vertical forms. On closer inspection, something organic begins to break through. Along the stems, clustered growths interrupt the clean lines, as if the brass itself has pushed outward—softening and reshaping what might otherwise be a strictly utilitarian candlestick.

The pair is deliberately asymmetrical in height, with one measuring approximately 16 cm and the other 11 cm. This variation reinforces their sculptural character, creating a subtle rhythm when placed together and allowing them to be read as a conversation rather than a matched set.

Cast in solid brass, the contrast between order and emergence gives the pieces their quiet tension. A warm, time-earned patina settles into the contours, catching light and shadow across the surfaces. Whether lit or left unadorned, they hold their presence with ease.

Balancing disciplined form with organic expression, the candleholders sit at the threshold between functional object and small-scale sculpture.

Designed by Kurt Jesch, whose work often explores the boundary between structure and material freedom.
