Sculptural Bronze Oyster Box
Italy, c. 1960s
Cast in solid bronze, this oyster-shaped box is formed with deep, tidal contours that echo the natural architecture of the shell. The surface carries a warm, copper-rich glow, with darker recesses and softly burnished highlights that reveal the depth and character of mid-century bronze casting.
The hinged lid opens to a smooth, gently hollowed interior, its fine granular texture left intentionally visible — a quiet trace of the casting process and hand finishing. Compact and weighty in the hand, the piece balances organic realism with sculptural restraint, typical of Italian decorative objects from the post-war period.
Both functional and poetic, it offers a refined place to hold jewellery or small keepsakes, while standing equally well as a sculptural object in its own right. An elegant example of how everyday forms were elevated into enduring design during the 1960s.
