Art Nouveau Silver-Plated Lily Candleholder

England, c. 1900s

About This Piece

Shaped as a lily in bloom, this Art Nouveau candleholder unfolds with a natural, fluid rhythm. Two fluted, trumpet-shaped candle cups rise from gently curving stems, their lines echoing the movement of a growing plant. The base opens like leaves at rest, grounding the piece while preserving its sense of lightness and flow.

The silver-plated surface has mellowed over time, developing a soft patina that deepens the contours of the form. Subtle variations in tone trace the curves of the metal, allowing the hand-worked quality of the piece to remain visible. Even when unlit, it reads as a sculptural object — expressive, balanced, and quietly decorative.

Marked EPNS and JBE a maker attributed to english handmade silverware, the candleholder was produced during the Art Nouveau period, when natural forms were translated into everyday objects with care and imagination. Designed for use, yet complete as an object in its own right, it carries the poetry of its era into the present.
