Stoneware Bowl with Galloping Horses in Relief

Marianne Starck | Denmark - c. 1950s

About This Piece

A large Danish stoneware bowl by Marianne Starck for Michael Andersen & Son, Bornholm c. 1950s.

Its surface is animated by four stylised galloping horses in relief, their elongated forms arranged in a circular rhythm around the centre of the bowl. The warm ochre glaze of the raised decoration contrasts with the dark, iron-brown ground, creating a highly tactile and sculptural composition.

Michael Andersen & Son was one of Bornholm’s most respected ceramic workshops, known for expressive glazes, relief decoration and collaborations with leading designers. Marianne Starck’s work for the studio is particularly sought after, especially her figural and animal designs from the mid-century period.

A substantial and highly decorative Scandinavian studio pottery piece, equally suited as a centrepiece, wall display, or serveware.
