Daum "Corolle" Smoky Blue Art Glass Vase

Nancy, France - c. 1950s

About This Piece

A striking mid-century modernist "Corolle" heavy art glass vase executed in an exquisite smoky gray/slate blue hue (gris fumé) by the prestigious French glassworks Daum Nancy, circa 1950s/1960s.

This exceptional piece beautifully captures the essence of the post-war Formes Libres (Free Forms) movement. The vase features a remarkably thick-walled, heavy base that rises into deep, organically sculpted vertical optic ribs. As these ribs ascend, they fluidly stretch and flare outward to create a dramatic, undulating 21 cm wide rim mimicking a blossom in full bloom.

The color depth shifting is spectacular—moving from an intense, near-black charcoal at the base to a luminous, translucent smoke along the rim, which catches and refracts light beautifully. A highly structural and sculptural statement piece that bridges the sheer presence of late Art Deco with the clean, fluid architectural lines of mid-century French modernism.
